BOOK LAUNCH: „VILLA TUGENDHAT. 1980–1985“

On Monday, 29 February 2016 a festive book launch took place in Villa Tugendhat. The publication „Tugendhat Villa. 1980–1985“, was published by the Brno City Museum in a bilingual version (Czech, English). The publication was prepared by the Villa Tugendhat Study and Documentation Centre (SDC-VT) as the 9th title in the SDC-VT publications, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the completion of the first renovation and reconstruction of the Tugendhat Villa in 1985.

The book follows in detail not only this significant segment of the building history of the famous monument of 20th century world architecture, listed by UNESCO. It also describes the background that preceded the implementation of this important and often daunting process, which has been severely limited by terms of reference and also the social and political atmosphere in then Communist Czechoslovakia.

The authors of the texts are art and architecture historians and also architects, who worked in the State Institute for the Renovation of Historic Towns and Listed Buildings in Brno (SÚRPMO Brno) in the years 1981–1982 and who prepared the project for the renovation of the villa. Design work was led by architect Kamil Fuchs, son of the protagonist of the Brno interwar avant-garde architecture Bohuslav Fuchs. And it was Kamil Fuchs the authors dedicated this publication to, to mark what would have been his 85th birthday and the 20th anniversary of his death. The publication’s patron was PhDr. Pavla Seitlová, daughter of Kamil Fuchs and granddaughter of Bohuslav Fuchs.
