Sold out! Film Screening: The Artist in the Villa Tugendhat garden

The 2011 French film The Artist pays tribute to the films of the late 1920’s and early 1930’s, a period when silent film was replaced by sound film. Directed by Michel Hazanavicius, the film has won numerous international awards, most famously five successful Oscar nominations in 2012.

Sold out! Film Screening: The Artist in the Villa Tugendhat garden

The story takes the audience to the cinematic Mecca  – Hollywood in 1927, where George Valentin (Jean Dujardin), the charismatic hero of silent films, is among the biggest stars of the silver screen.  His fame seems unshakable. But when Valentin bumps into a young fan girl, Peppa Miller (Bérénice Bejo), at the premiere of one of his films, the tables begin to turn. The hitherto silent film is supplemented with a soundtrack, and the usual methods undergo considerable changes.

The first silent film to be nominated for an Oscar since 1928 also takes us back to the 1920’s in terms of its technical aspects – the film does not have the usual soundtrack we know from modern films, but it is accompanied by music and the dialogue is translated into written form. The film was also shot without zoom lenses, as they were not commonly used in the 1920’s.
