SLOVAK ACTOR AND POLITICIAN MILAN KŇAŽKO VISITED VILLA TUGENDHAT

On Tuesday, 24 September 2013, actor and politician Milan Kňažko visited Villa Tugendhat. He gave an interview in the garden to a Czech Television crew for purposes of a documentary entitled EX-PRIME MINISTERS. The interview focused on the division of Czechoslovakia. Key political negotiations of this turning point period in the history of the Czech and Slovak nations took place in the summer of 1992 directly in Villa Tugendhat. On 26 August 1992, the then prime ministers of the Czech and Slovak governments, Václav Klaus and Vladimír Mečiar, signed a treaty about the division of Czechoslovakia. On 1 January 1993, two new countries came into being in the map of Europe – the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Milan Kňažko, until 1990 member of the drama ensemble of the Slovak National Theatre, was also engaged as advisor to president Václav Havel (1990), vice minister and minister of foreign affairs of Slovakia (1992-1993) and minister of culture of Slovakia (1998-2002). As a politician, he took part in the negotiations about the division of the country and was also present as member of the Slovak delegation during the negotiations in Villa Tugendhat.
