Mies van der Rohe

CROWN HALL

Crown Hall came about on the IIT University grounds in Chicago in 1950–56. Mies disturbed the order characteristic for the entire IIT complex with his building for the faculty of architecture. The construction principle for Crown Hall bears similarities with Farnsworth House, on a monumental scale, however. Mies, himself, referred to the work as his “finest work”. The concept of the free arrangement of the space was perfectly accomplished here.
