BAUHAUS & WOMEN
An educational programme focused on interior design, and in particular on the work of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and interior designer Lilly Reich. We will explore materials, textures, lines, shapes, and colours against the backdrop of the principles established by the Bauhaus, the modernist school of architecture, art, and design.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe became its last director, and Lilly Reich briefly headed the department of interior and textile design there before the school was permanently closed by the Nazis. While Mies achieved immense fame during his lifetime and became one of the most celebrated modernist architects, the role of his collaborator Lilly Reich was, until recently, overlooked. We will therefore follow the traces she left in the villa and, based on the clues, explore how her work was reflected in the final design of the Tugendhat Villa’s interiors.
What made the Bauhaus school of art and design so exceptional? What was the status of women—not only in the fields of art and design—100 years ago? What is a Gesamtkunstwerk, and how is it manifested in the Tugendhat Villa?
