FAMOUS BRNO VILLAS IN VILLA TUGENDHAT

FAMOUS BRNO VILLAS IN VILLA TUGENDHAT

An exhibition concerning the unique appearance of modern Brno architecture by means of pictures, photographs, plans, models and the stories of both the architects and the commissioners…

The villas of Brno are experiencing a renaissance after years of stagnation under the previous regime. Renowned villas initially came about in Brno as summer homes and only later as permanent homes for families. The most famous era for Brno villas consisted of the between-the-wars period when the renowned Nový dům Functionalist settlement emerged in Žabovřesky. Construction work also took place in the neighborhood Masarykova čvrt’ and villa colonies further came about in additional locales, particularly in the areas Černá Pole, Královo Pole and Žabovřesky.

The Tugendhats moved into their villa, which had been designed two years earlier by the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, in Černá Pole at Christmas 1930. This new structure caused an unprecedented commotion on the Czech architectural scene.

After the Velvet Revolution brought the Socialist era of constructing so-called panel buildings to a close, architecturally interesting villas began to be built once more in Brno. The exhibition includes presentations of villas from the beginning of the current century.

The primary goal of the exhibition is to present a collection of renowned villas constructed in Brno, an important centre for the cultural and social life of modern Czech society, over a period starting from the turn of the 20th century up to the present. Attention will be drawn to the creative talents of the architects and the requirements of the cultivated commissioners.

The exhibition will contain both pictorial and textual materials, period plans, family photographs, pictures of the interiors of the buildings, portraits of the commissioner, along with their families, and the architect and finally informative texts concerning the actual buildings with basic data, etc.

The selection of villa structures in Brno serves as a ‘small’ history of the architecture, not only of this Moravian city, but also of wider territorial connections. Come to the exhibition and make an acquaintance with names such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Adolf Loos, Leopold Bauer, Bohuslav Fuchs, Ernst Wiesner and others.

THE EXHIBITION OPENING FOR THE PUBLIC WILL TAKE PLACE IN VILLA TUGENDHAT ON 7TH SEPTEMBER 2012 AT 7 PM.

Estimated end at 8 pm.
The garden will be open from 6.30 pm.
