“Thoughts on the Ground Plan: Spatial Ideas in Mies, Loos, Strnad, Frank and Scharoun”
During the early decades of the last century, Central Europe was not a fertile ground for discussions about building style, but also for experiments involving issues of architectural space, movement, and procession. This lecture will examine the works and ideas of five seminal thinkers—Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Adolf Loos, Oskar Strnad, Josef Frank, and Hans Scharoun—and how each contributed to modern conceptions of space-making.
Christopher Long is professor of architectural and design history at the University of Texas at Austin. He studied at the universities of Graz, Vienna, and Munich and received his doctorate at the University of Texas in 1993. In 1994–1995, he taught at the Central European University in Prague. He is the author of Josef Frank: Life and Work (2002), Paul T. Frankl and Modern American Design (2007), and The Looshaus (2012).
The lecture takes place Monday, 19 November 2012 at 5 p.m. in the technical floor of the Tugendhat Villa (a tour of the villa IS NOT included in the lecture). The lecture will be in English without translation.
